Rising Fuel Prices – Who Bears the Real Burden?
Petrol and diesel prices have remained elevated across major cities, with petrol crossing ₹105/litre in several states after state tax revisions. Opposition parties blame central taxes that constitute nearly 55% of the pump price, while the government points to global crude oil market volatility. The burden on the middle class and transporters is significant.

Central excise on petrol is ₹19.90/litre and states add another ₹20-30. Together that's 40-50% of the pump price. This is essentially a tax on mobility.

I understand the revenue need but there should be a cap. Auto-rickshaw and truck drivers are being squeezed the most. Their income hasn't grown but fuel cost is up 40% in 5 years.
