Yes – 55% of pump price is tax. The government has full control over that 55%. Blaming global markets for 100% of the problem is dishonest.

The tax component funds LPG subsidies for the poor, PMAY homes, and Jal Jeevan Mission. Cutting it means cutting services. What's the alternative revenue source?

Wealth tax, higher corporate tax for profitable PSUs, rationalising defence procurement. There are other levers. The poor use public transport anyway – fuel tax hurts middle class most.
