India cannot claim to be a modern democracy while allowing practices like polygamy to continue under religious personal law. UCC is a step toward genuine equality.
Polygamy is already restricted in practice. The government should focus on enforcing existing laws. UCC is being used as a political tool rather than a genuine reform measure.
Even if enforcement improves, the legal framework is inconsistent. A uniform framework creates clarity and removes loopholes.
The timing matters – this push comes right before elections every time. Real reform requires consensus. Have any minority communities been meaningfully consulted?
